we both know i'm leaving
i'm already gone
even if i'm here today

the line that defines
the shape of our lives
slowly bleeds into gray

the line that divides
this world from my mind
can only lead me away

I held his hand at one point as well. Maybe not in the same mindset that my grandmother had. To her, It was like she was attempting to give him some of her life force.

When I held his hand, it was like fearful analysis. To feel the details of his skin as I held his hand. To watch the glazed look in his eyes. I touched him and knew he was a shell of what he once was. I still feel his hollowness from time to time...or some memory of it. Perhaps it's not his hollowness I feel now, but a hollowness of my own, with the knowledge of something to compare it to.

The suggester writes: "The raw emotion shown in this is unlike anything I have ever seen captured in a single photograph before. A lot of people have witnessed something similar to this, myself included. It is not easy, and to capture it in such an amazing shot is not something many can do." Not sure I can do this justice but hell I'll give it a go. The least I can do for a random llama badge.
I came to Oslo's page by chance and this image was there waiting to take my breath away, not gently. Immediately my attention was demanded, first by the dying man's gaping, sunken, gasping mouth, his closed unseeing eyes. Then my own eye wanders, slowly, cautiously, timidly even, given the mood that this strange, disquieting visage evokes. The tubes, I note. The hospital bed, the stark white linens. The clasped hand--whose hand is that providing comfort, solace, companionship at the end? A glint of ring...and then I see the woman. Huddled, dark head bent. Waiting, being. Surviving.
It looks to me as if a message of love and farewell were being transferred from heart to heart through those clasped hands as surely as oxygen is sent through the tubes. And the entire photo, complete, shifts from a feeling of strange and nearly macabre to one of tenderness, to an illustration of the pain and joy and intimacy of being human, being mortal, and being loved.

Was he dead here? Or just acting, in the photo?
Reaper-X Featured By Owner Aug 7, 2011
This was before he died, actually.

Okay, this is so.... emotive. And it's the REAL kind of emotive.
It's sad. Sad doesn't cut it, but there's really no word strong enough.
To be able to capture a moment like this... a moment where somebody's slipping away.... If I was the woman, I think that memories would be rushing through my head, then *poof* they're gone, and so is he.... But I can't begin to imagine what she was thinking. And the amount of love put into that hand-holding isn't even measurable.

5 out of 5 stars in everything.
